What to see at Piazza dei Miracoli
The four monuments of the complex, one by one.
Leaning Tower
The world's most famous bell tower, begun in 1173 on alluvial ground that gave way even during construction. Completed in 1372, it's now stabilised and can be climbed to the top along 296 steps.
Pisa Cathedral
Begun in 1063 to celebrate a Pisan naval victory over the Saracens at Palermo, it's the model for Pisan Romanesque architecture. Inside are Giovanni Pisano's pulpit and the so-called "Galileo's lamp".
Baptistery
Italy's largest baptistery, begun in 1152. Its double-shell dome creates unique acoustics, demonstrated every hour by staff with a multi-note sung chord.
Monumental Cemetery
Built from 1277 around soil brought back from Golgotha during the Crusades. Damaged by 1944 bombing, it still holds fragments of the original medieval frescoes, including the Triumph of Death.
How to plan your visit to the four monuments
The Leaning Tower requires a separate, fixed-time ticket: book it first, then plan your visit to the Cathedral, Baptistery and Cemetery around that time slot. The Opera della Primavera's combined tickets cover various entry combinations, excluding the Tower.
