Piazza dei Miracoli, Pisa
The Leaning Tower, the Cathedral, the Baptistery and the Monumental Cemetery: four white masterpieces on a great green lawn, a UNESCO World Heritage site at the heart of Pisa. An independent guide with the practical information you actually need.
Leaning Tower
The Cathedral's bell tower, begun in 1173: the ground gave way even before construction was finished, producing the famous tilt. Now stabilised, it can be climbed to the top for a view over the square.
Pisa Cathedral
A masterpiece of Pisan Romanesque architecture, with a facade of stacked arcaded galleries; inside is the famous pulpit carved by Giovanni Pisano between 1302 and 1310.
Baptistery
Italy's largest baptistery, famous for its extraordinary acoustics: every hour a live demonstration shows how the double-shell dome amplifies a single sung note.
Monumental Cemetery
A historic cemetery built around "holy soil" brought back from Golgotha, with a marble cloister and medieval frescoes including the celebrated Triumph of Death.
The name "Field of Miracles" comes from literature
For centuries the square was simply called Piazza del Duomo. It was Gabriele D'Annunzio, in his 1910 novel "Forse che sì forse che no", who coined the phrase "Campo dei Miracoli" to describe the extraordinary group of white monuments rising from a great green lawn — a contrast that remains the city's most photographed image today.
The square is free and always visible, but climbing the Leaning Tower has capped, timed access: booking ahead is recommended, especially in high season.
Trattorias in the centre
Cecina, bordatino and Pisan-style salt cod: the best restaurants are often in the alleys towards the Lungarni, away from tourist-menu spots right on the square.

The cafes around Piazza dei Cavalieri and along the Lungarni are a daily ritual for students and locals, not just a tourist souvenir.
